This school year has been a tough one for new students. Part of the college experience is getting involved on campus with others who share similar interests. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken away some of the things that we formerly took for granted, but we are slowly gaining some of these luxuries back, with safety precautions in place.

The “Meet Ups” concept was born after student feedback revealed that ETSU students were burnt out from virtual events and craved some form of in-person interaction. Designed for students, by students, these meet ups will follow the university guidelines for social distancing, as well as those recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The “Meet Ups” will help build community with students, and get new students involved on campus. The groups can be organized by students looking to create a community of similar interests, or may be sponsored by an office, department, or student organization. Indoor events will be limited to a 15 person capacity, while outdoor events have a more lenient 50 person limit.

This new concept has come at a good time in the semester, with more assignments and due dates piling up, they provide students temporary relief from their responsibilities while building community at the same time.

While these “Meet Ups” will probably be a good change of scenery for those who live on or near campus, they do not offer a solution to the solitude for students who live in more remote areas, or for those who still do not feel comfortable in large groups.

For these students, virtual events will still take place in order for everyone to have an option. A web page has been set up for students interested in getting involved or creating in a group.
