The EcoNuts hosted a sustainable Halloween crafting event via Zoom on Oct. 29.

“With the virus, we have done multiple trash pickups around campus,” said Chloe Poole, a third year EcoNut. “We’ve also done trash pickups in university woods along with a couple people from ETSU Outdoors. For housing we’ve done two Zoom events for the students. This will be our second one.”

The EcoNuts got together to make Halloween crafts by reusing toilet paper rolls and a glass jar. They also used cardstock, googly eyes, tulle or gauze, a glue stick, electric fairy lights and a black marker. Using these items, they made a toilet paper bat and a mummy or ghost out of the glass jar.

“This event is a fun way for people to make some crafty Halloween decorations and to show that it’s really easy to upcycle something that was only designed to be single use,” said Poole.

The event was led by Lilith Erbach, a first year EcoNut, who said she was going to use the recycled Halloween crafts as decorations in her home.

“I’m going to hang these around my house and from my ceiling so I will be making a lot for that,” said Erbach.

The EcoNuts said that the event was created to be fun way for students to express themselves through crafting while also being enviromentally concious by using recycled and reusable materials for the crafts.

“I take after Bob Ross’s philosophy: ‘No mistakes, just happy accidents,'” said Erbach as she made her crafts.

The EcoNuts are also hosting an in-person succulent planting event on Nov. 18. to help students get out of their dorms and make friends.
