Virginia Holley, a member of the ETSU Student Association for Young Children, has organized a YouTube channel as a place for young children to watch storytelling.

“I was not read to as a child, which is another reason why we started this channel was because I know there are children out there that don’t have the resources that they need.” said Holley. “And so, my thought process was let’s have a channel where children can watch people read and they can hear those vocabulary words and the phonics and they’re getting what they need.”

For Dr. Seuss Day, also known as Read Across America Day, Holley is planning a livestream of Dr. Seuss books all day March 2, in which different people will read various Dr. Seuss books.

Any kind of recording is welcomed by SAYC. The organization appreciates any recommendations and even asked children what they would like to hear as well.

“We work with these children, we take pride in them,” said Holley. “We used to have a Dr. Seuss night, but with COVID-19 we couldn’t, and that’s another reason we came up with the YouTube channel because we wanted to work with young children, and we wanted to figure out what we could do to help these young children.”

The SAYC is putting on a “Give A Child A Book” book drive and is taking donations from now until April 30.

“We’re kind of a small organization, so we try to get our community involved and the faculty and students involved,” said Holley. “We’re just trying to get it out there.”
