ETSU is making large strides in increasing awareness about climate change by offering workshops on the subject for faculty and students alike. These workshops allow participants to research topics involved in climate change and showcase their work to provide information for students and faculty members.
An issue that I have noticed in regard to the topic of climate change is that a lot of people are seriously undereducated on the matter. The subject has become sort of a political stance rather than a scientific fact, with large quantities of people brushing it aside because their political party tells them to. There are extremes on both sides, however, some people choose to not educate others of their findings and beliefs with reason and a peaceful tone, opting instead to shove their beliefs down others throats.
The earth has been getting warmer for the past several hundred years due to the steady increase of people on the planet and the waste that they produce.
Studies show that interactive hands-on learning is one of the best ways to learn something and retain the information. If people do their own research they will develop a valid opinion on the topic and will be able to have enough evidence to defend it against people who disagree. In this way, more discussions will be held on the subject and people will listen to other people’s ideas rather than brushing them off because they disagree on a matter of science.
This event will help people in East Tennessee begin the process of taking the issue of climate change seriously. When the ETSU community comes together to raise awareness of this issue, their peers will begin to see things through other points of view and will hopefully begin to do something about the situation.
