The ETSU College of Public Health is making leaps and bounds in the field of research, and they have recently developed a research facility with a focus in reducing cardiovascular disease and risks in the central Appalachian region.
This is a big deal for the university, because the first step in solving a problem is to educate the public. Who better to do this than one of the most well-known universities in our area? ETSU is widely trusted and will potentially receive enough funding and donations to keep the research going for years to come. As for the Appalachian region as a whole, any attempts to educate on and eliminate cardiovascular issues will go a long way in improving the health of the region.
One thing that I can totally get behind with this new research facility is their vision to identify issues and find and apply practical solutions to those problems. That is something that I think has been overlooked quite frequently in the evolution of medicine and the educating of the healthcare providers of the future. They are trained to offer a solution to certain symptoms, instead of researching the symptoms and identifying the root cause of the issues to eliminate all of it at the source.
Certain medications that are targeted to correct one issue are potentially harmful to another issue, so providers prescribe more medications to their patient to reduce the risks of the original medicine.
This new center has the potential to be one of the greatest things to happen to ETSU. In all, with the work that they will be putting in, it has the potential to reduce the number of medicines that people take and will improve the overall health of the people in East Tennessee and Central Appalachia.
