The Counseling Center at ETSU is providing a variety of in-person and telehealth services to students.
“Our services are brief, solution-focused counseling,” said Jesse Henderson, a staff counselor with the Counseling Center.
The center offers one-on-one sessions, as well as group therapy and workshops.
“The traditional one that most students think of is one-on-one personal counseling,” said Henderson.
In-person and telehealth services are available.
“Currently, we are offering both,” said Henderson. “For in-person, the student and the counselor just both have to have on masks. All of our rooms have enough space so we can distance.”
In order for a student to begin counseling, they’ll need to complete a needs assessment.
“Monday through Thursday we have two two-hour blocks, each day, where a student can come in for a needs assessment,” said Henderson. “The needs assessments are just where the student and the clinician are getting an idea for what the needs are for the student.”
Another form of one-on-one counseling is “Single Session Therapy.”
“It’s really solution-focused,” said Henderson. “The student already has an idea exactly what they want help with, and they just want feedback from a counselor.”
“Let’s Talk” is a less formal approach for a student to receive counsel without the technical process of therapy.
“It’s more skill-building,” said Henderson. “Just a space for somebody to connect with another human in a way that doesn’t have to be clinical.”
The Counseling Center welcomed five new counseling staff this semester.
“Each of the new staff are taking over outreach areas,” said Henderson.
The center is adding a Mindfulness group to its roster of group therapy programs and is interested in hearing from students who have ideas for group therapy.
“We are trying to get new groups formed for students who don’t necessarily want just 1-on-1 counseling. They want more of a group therapy experience,” Henderson said.
