There is a lot of questioning wondering if ETSU can be a more sustainable campus, especially if we are making a greater impact on the environment with thousands of students living onto campus again. The short answer is yes.

We absolutely can make a difference and become a more sustainable campus. Johnson City as a whole is a unique part of the country in relation to climate awareness, whether it be good or bad. We are in Appalachia, Tennessee, an area included in the Tennessee Valley Authority’s hydroelectric power system. We are minutes from multiple dams providing hydroelectricity to our area.

ETSU students can limit their plastic water bottle usage, walk to their classes instead of drive and research the green-friendly clubs on campus. It would be worthwhile to get involved in Green Club, an organization on campus that aims to teach generations knowledge about the natural world we all share and how to be sustainably aware of it, even on campus.

An easy way to start being more individually environmentally aware is to limit the use of plastic containers. For example, instead of using shampoo or conditioner that comes in a plastic bottle, use bar soap or glass bottles and get refills.

There are also reusable grocery bags, metal straws, silverware, glass dishes and so much more that have the potential to significantly decrease plastic use since they are reusable.

Though paper products are biodegradable, to prevent deforestation, one could use fabric napkins that need a quick wash and dry over traditional paper towels.

There are endless ways that we can change our mindless use of non-reusables for the better of not only our campus environment, but the atmosphere as a whole, too. An easy internet search will provide a number of articles with tips on how to become more environmentally conscious.

Help change the world for the better with small steps that simultaneously help ETSU become a more sustainable campus.
