Self-care as a college student is incredibly important. If you are anything like me, you wait to do your self-care until that first cry session of the semester. I want to take a moment to say that I am by no means an expert of the mental health profession. However, I believe these recommended practices can genuinely help individuals.
First, time management. I know that for some, time management doesn’t sound like self-care, but your future self will thank you for being prepared and not overbooking your schedule.
To manage my time, I block my schedule into three major components, and they each have subcomponents. For example, in the school category, I have research, studying, class, meetings and homework. So, I make sure when planning out my weeks to place these in such a way that there is time for all of these. I also make sure that I have time for my friends and things I like to do with free-time.
This brings me to my next idea; spending time with friends and yourself. Spending time with others during the COVID-19 pandemic can be hard. However, there are some really great options.
A walk around nearby Founder’s Park next to the water is a great option. Taking a hike to the Blue Hole, or getting takeout and sitting at Boone Lake is another great option. My family and I enjoy both Boone Lake and South Holston.
Year round, you can rent a boat on the lake and spend time with those you love. A bit of a splurge, but a wonderful experience.
Now, for my last bit, spend time with yourself. Schedule some time to take care of the errands that you need to do and the healthcare appointments you have been avoiding, and find time to reset yourself and your space.
I find that if once a month, I deep-clean and declutter, I feel infinitely better. I also find time to do the things I love, like reading, catching up on my TV shows and driving out to the lake. These tips may just help you to feel a little better this semester!
