On September 21, 2021, ETSU’s different cultural groups gathered to celebrate the International Day of Peace.
Representatives of these organizations came with a commitment to put peace above differences and share the importance of learning to respect those around us with all who attended.
Four students took part in the panel discussion, answering questions regarding both world peace and how we can create peace and inclusivity on campus. Students are always encouraged to take part in new opportunities and reach out to others on campus, and this panel discussion certainly highlighted the importance.
Tanya Chavez, with the Hispanic American Student Community Alliance (HASCA), spoke about creating peace in both the community and at ETSU.
“Every organization on this campus is built on a different idea, and they all start with one mission on how they can support each other,” said Chavez.
One main topic discussed was getting students more involved with organizations so that they can feel welcomed and included on campus. If there is not already an organization that meets expectations, students are encouraged to create their own. The panel and those in the audience all agreed on one main topic: belonging. A shared goal at the discussion for the future of ETSU is that there will be even more inclusion and belonging for students–if they have this, the attendees hope, they can bring more peace to campus.
Following the panel discussion, candles were lit for the Peace Vigil, and a member of the gospel choir sang, “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. After the performance, everyone in attendance was given a balloon to release outside. At the balloon release, everyone cheered for “peace at ETSU” and released the balloons into the sky.
Students are encouraged to keep a peaceful outlook every day, be involved with multicultural groups on campus and respect and learn about different beliefs and cultural backgrounds.
