There is a new book club arriving on campus, run by Jonathan Wilson, Distance & Online Education Coordinator, and Lydia Gwyn, Student Engagement and Instruction Coordinator.
This semester, the book club is reading “The Firekeeper’s Daughter,” a story by Angeline Boulley. Wilson described why he chose this book and explained that it was to broaden different community topics.
“Sherrod Library wanted to facilitate a book club for ETSU students to further engage and educate students on a variety of community topics, specifically focusing on diverse characters, cultures and storylines,” said Wilson.
The diverse literature selection in the book club is apparent. Wilson hopes to promote conversations from the book about meaningful topics in and out of the book club to help participants understand different cultures and their diversity.
“With ‘Firekeeper’s Daughter’, readers should gain a richer understanding of the Ojibwe culture through the eyes of a strong female protagonist,” said Wilson.
Students will obtain new knowledge of culture within great literature read by the book club and be more informed on important topics, not only in our country, but around the world. There will only be one book a semester so that their is time and space to focus on the key lessons and topics that come from each work being read by the club.
“It’s a great way to get outside of your comfort zone and to discuss topics that would not be talked about,” said Wilson. “It is also a great way to connect with other students, gain a different perspective, and decrease stress.”
The meeting schedule of the book club is very flexible, with the meetings both in person and on zoom. The meetings are twice a semester, and refreshments are provided by the library for each student who attends them.
