On Oct. 1, The EDGE 89.5 student radio station celebrated College Radio Day, as well as the grand opening of its new station on the second floor of the Culp Center.
College Radio Day is celebrated by 600 radio stations in 40 different countries who come together to share their love of creating and sharing media. The celebration took place in the Student Media Center and consisted of cupcakes, cookies and conversations with various members of the radio staff.
“College Radio Day is a wonderful day that unites college students all over the world and recognizes the importance of skills that college radio brings to students,” said Candy Bryant, the faculty advisor for The EDGE 89.5 radio station.
The EDGE 89.5 was created in 1997 by Josh Brandon, an undergraduate student who was searching for a radio outlet on a campus that otherwise had none. Brandon graduated in 2000, and, 21 years later, still enjoys coming back to see how the station has grown and flourished.
“My favorite part is the excitement behind the frontier of media. It’s the training grounds for these kids,” said Brandon. “I love being able to celebrate the hard work that goes into being a media professional, especially when you’re not getting paid to be.”
The celebration is one that has been long-awaited by everyone, including Erika McCluskey, station manager for The Edge.
McCluskey expressed her gratitude toward having a studio of their own inside the Culp Center.
Previously, The EDGE 89.5 studios had been located in the basement of Warf-Pickel Hall. “This is a new and unique opportunity that we have,” said McCluskey. “I’m looking forward to being in front of people and showing them what we put our hearts into.”
