The Bucs made their return home Saturday following their thriller at Samford when they faced a (1-2) Wofford Terrier football team, winning a thriller 27-21 in front of a record 10,153 fans at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.
The Bucs entered the day 4-0 and ranked No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll.
Looking to continue their offensive domination with help from the explosive backfield, the Bucs would end the day with a 5-0 record as they defeated their SoCon rival.
After ending the first quarter with a 10-0 lead, off the early score by Quay Holmes (Powder Springs, Ga.) and a field goal by the reigning SoCon Player of The Week Kicker Tyler Keltner (Tallahassee, Fla.).
The second quarter saw an offensive outburst by Wofford as they would score 14 in the quarter and take the lead for a moment until the Bucs’ running back Jacob Saylors (Jasper, Tenn.), with :24 seconds remaining in the quarter, put the Bucs back on top 17-14 at half.
The third quarter would see Wofford take the lead early into the next half on a 47-yard TD, and the Bucs would eventually answer with another field goal leaving the Bucs trailing 20-21 as fourth quarter play began.
The Bucs scored quickly by air when QB Tyler Riddell (Tampa, Fla.) found Quay Holmes for a 77-yard touchdown, the running backs second touchdown of the day and put the Bucs up 27-21. After a late game drive, the Bucs had all but sealed the victory when Keltner missed a 35-yard field goal that would have put the Bucs up by nine with 1-minute left. Wofford attempted to mount a comeback drive, but the Bucs defense held the Terriers and forced a turnover on downs to secure the win for the Bucs.
The Bucs’ QB Tyler Riddell had 268 passing yards and threw 21/30. The dual threat running back Quay Holmes had 81 yards on the ground with 1 TD and 104 receiving yards and added another touchdown in the category.
The undefeated Bucs will look to continue their hot streak at home when the Citadel visits on Oct. 9. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
