Meet Ashe Greenberg, senior captain of the ETSU Overwatch team and a devoted player who has been with the program since the start.
Greenberg was one of the first people to express interest in an eSports team, said coach Jeff Shell. She was there for the creation of the team and took up the mantle of team captain in the summer of 2020. This is the team’s second season of playing, snagging win after win with only one loss so far.
The team has been matched up against other regional teams by NACE, the National Association of Collegiate eSports. At this rate, the team has a good chance of making it to the playoffs.
Greenberg is a biology major from Oakridge, Tennessee, who plans to become a speech therapist. She chose ETSU for its location and quality programs. She started playing Overwatch in 2016 because she admired the clean look of the game and ended up falling in love with it.
Playing support for the team, Greenberg’s favorite hero is Ana, but she usually plays a different character, such as Brigitte or Mercy. She’s respected by her teammates and admired for her leadership skills and quick communication.
“She’s really great as a team captain, because no matter what’s going on outside of the team or inside of the team, I always feel comfortable talking to her,” said her teammate, Zachary Strunk.
As team captain, Greenberg keeps her teammates accountable not only in-game but also in their classes and lives overall. She also contacts schools for rescheduling games and creating in-game lobbies.
“Her natural ability to help lead people, help keep people organized has been such a great asset to me as a captain,” said Shell. “She’s done, actually in December, so she graduates this semester. I really feel like we’re losing a big part of the team, a big part of what’s keeping me sane behind the scenes. So the next captain is going to have to step up big to fill the shoes laid and the expectations she’s set so far.”
Greenberg’s next match will be Oct. 21 against St. Andrews University. To learn more about upcoming matches, visit https://www.etsu.edu/esports/.
