ETSU basketball fans filled Brooks Gym last week during Buc Madness, an exciting introduction to the men’s and women’s teams and the upcoming season through fun challenges and games.

“I think it was really fun, and a really good way to get everyone excited about the upcoming season and get everyone excited to come out,” said Sadie King, a student in attendance.

Buc Madness was sponsored by Johnson City Honda and took place in Brooks Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The event began with an energetic welcome from Scott Carter, ETSU athletics director, and continued to build up excitement from the crowd with a performance by the ETSU dance team and then the ETSU drumline.

Then came the introduction of the women’s and men’s basketball teams and staff, with many of the players dancing to the music as they walked across the court and threw t-shirts to the crowd. Coaches Simon Harris and Desmond Oliver offered fun facts about the players as their names were called.

After introductions came a series of skills challenges, including serious competitions like a three-point shootout but also some silly ones, like a relay race including tricycles. Some of the activities involved other students and the audience, such as the tug-of-war with student organizations as well as two audience members chosen to pick a winning side. Buc Madness also featured a Shooting Stars competition and a dunk contest.

Rounding out the night was a series of free throws by former athletics director Dr. Richard Sanders, of which each successful throw awarded a student from the crowd $200 in book scholarships and resulted in awards for seven students.

ETSU students and the community as a whole is excited for the upcoming season, whether it be anticipation for a game against UT or advancement to conference playoffs. “I’m trying to see them in March Madness. At least once while I’m here,” said Papus Mbiya, a student fan.
