The Department of Sustainability’s EcoNuts hosted a Halloween-themed event for their Lights Out! series.
“It’s to encourage students to turn off their electronics and come outside,” said Madison Hayton, a team leader for EcoNuts.
EcoNuts is “a group of student workers that are paid by the Department of Sustainability to help run and plan sustainability events and initiatives on campus,” according to the group’s official webpage.
The event was held in an outdoor pavilion at Tri-Hall Field. Decorating the pavilion were posters and signage that addressed the theme of Halloween Sustainability. One of the signs read, “The average American uses 24% more energy than the average person around the world.”
There were also tips for “green decor” and eco-friendly party favors, DIY costume ideas and upcycled activities, as well as refreshments for attendees, games to play and a gift card raffle at the end of the event.
“We go around to recycling centers and collect materials to do crafts and set up carnival games,” said Hayton.
Lights Out! is a weekly series hosted by EcoNuts every Thursday where they promote different themes and initiatives centered around sustainability and eco-conservation.
“It’s usually at Tri-Hall, but as it gets colder, we may have to move it indoors,” said Hayton.
The next event will be held alongside the Farmer’s Market at Upper Pride Lawn on Thursday, Oct. 28.
“From 12 to 2 we’ll be doing a pumpkin painting,” Hayton said.
The following Thursday, Nov. 5, will feature a Fall Crafts event at the Cave.
