Students and faculty may not be aware that The EDGE Radio Station has been haunted for decades by a Depression-era ghost named Alice.

“Alice has been around since probably the 1970s. Every time the station moved, Alice went with it. We’re pretty sure she moved with us in our new location,” said Candy Bryant, the multimedia specialist and equipment manager.

According to legend, Alice was the daughter of a wealthy family, but she fell in love with a poor man. Her father did not approve of this man, so he paid him to go away. Since it was the 1930s and the height of the depression, the man took the money and left. Alice was so distraught over her long-lost love that she hung herself in the family home.

“According to legend, the stained-glass window is a memorial to Alice, and that is currently housed in the Nicks Building,” said Bryant.

Alice’s old home has been torn down by now, but she still has fun with the patrons of the EDGE.

“Alice is not a mean ghost at all. She is really mischievous. We think she gets lonely from time to time. She will stop a recording for no reason. She will turn on the lights; she will turn off lights. She will make songs disappear out of our computer and then reappear,” said Bryant.

The DJs over the year have brought Alice gifts and think that she especially loves Mardi Gras beads, leading to the installment of a coat rack in the radio station especially for her beads. Alice even has her own press badge, which is kept in the Student Media Center.

“When we go on the radio station, we always say ‘good morning, Alice’ or ‘good afternoon, Alice.’ We try to make her feel at home as our resident spirit,” said Bryant.
