Marvel’s “Eternals” hit theatres on Nov. 5, coming off a wave of negative reviews despite its all-star cast and Oscar-winning director, Chloe Zhao.
Eternals follows a group of immortal beings sent to Earth thousands of years ago to fight off their ancient enemy, the Deviants.
Unfortunately, after one bad fight, the group splits apart and spends centuries waiting to be told they can return to their home by their creators, the Celestials.
The movie introduces an amazing new cast of characters with big names such as Kit Harrington as Dane Whitman, Angelina Jolie as the warrior Thena and Salma Hayek as the healer Ajak.
The cast features Marvel’s most diverse set of characters, including the Deaf speedster Makkari, gay, Black inventor Phastos, and female, Asian leader, Sersi.
Currently, the film has Rotten Tomatoes score of 48% with an audience score of 84%, making it the lowest rated movie in the MCU and the first to be classified as rotten.
“An ambitious superhero epic that soars as often as it strains, Eternals takes the MCU in intriguing — and occasionally confounding — new directions,” said critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, these reviews have come under fire by many, citing various homophobic and racist reviewers flooding the site within the first few weeks of the movie’s premiere.
As a Marvel fan, I found the movie introduced many great characters and opened many new storylines for the MCU to explore in phase four.
Given the time constraints and the number of characters, it was understandably hard to add in-depth back story and detail to every character, but the movie does a great job of making viewers interested in upcoming projects with these characters.
Overall, I believe Marvel fans will be happy with the latest installment in the franchise.
Remember to stay until the very end for the two end-credit scenes that introduce new characters, including one played by a very famous musician.
