So many people have mixed opinions about decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving, and disagreements are often seen on social media the day after Halloween.

Personally, I think that Thanksgiving is merely a food coma in between Christmas and Halloween and the holiday decorations don’t change that. Others may think that there are specific time periods for decorations. This debate could be heard for all holidays. Some people have their Easter decor out from Ash Wednesday to Ordinary Time. Others have their Easter decorations up for the week before Easter and it’s taken dow right after. Some start decorating for summer at the end of April and don’t put it away unti October. Others put their summer-y decorations up at the end of May, right before Memorial Day, and put it away right after Labor Day. It truly is up to the person decorating.

So what is the reason some individuals get so worked up about those of us who enjoy putting Christmas decorations up right after Thanksgiving? I believe that we have been taught to believe that each and every holiday deserves a complete decoration ensemble, but the reality of this is that most don’t feel the need to decorate for anything other than the major holidays they celebrate.

What do I do? I celebrate the holidays I enjoy for as long as I can. I prefer Christmas to be up from Nov. 1 until after New Years. I keep my winter decorations up until after April. Summer decorations in my house are typically displayed from May 1 to the beginning of September. After that, it’s Halloween decor until November begins, and my way of decorating is normal and acceptable. These things do not make me weird, and they don’t make anyone else weird. If you want to only decorate for 10 days or to celebrate for 60, do it! Life is too short to argue over a string of Christmas lights!
