ETSU-Con is a convention organized by the Japanese Cultural Society that celebrates anything sci-fi-fantasy, anime or gaming related.

Zack James, con chair, discussed some of the exciting things ETSU-Con will be displaying and how each department will be presented in the event.

“We take time to show what ETSU has to offer to many different mediums from departments such as Digital Media, Japanese, Theatre, Storytelling and more,” said James.

James enjoys his position as con chair, but he hopes the event will be more student-run in the future to make it more relatable and fun for all.

“I ran the show for several years back when I was a student and hope to train a new group of students so that in the future the event can be almost entirely student-run,” said James.

ETSU-Con has been around for quite some time. It started in 2013 when a Fredric Poag, an alumnus, wanted to bring the convention experience not only to ETSU, but also to the Tri-Cities area as a whole. Since then, ETSU-Con has become bigger and better each year.

“We worked hard on our first show, bringing in almost 900 people our first year,” said James. “We are now averaging 2,000 attendees per year.”

James encourages students to do anything they can to help ETSU-Con become a huge hit in the spring.

“We, of course, need folks to help with various responsibilities such as guest relations, event scheduling, vendor hall coordination and so much more,” said James.

James held a meeting for students to attend to in the Culp Center Cave on Nov. 17 to learn more about helping with the event.

ETSU-Con will take place on April 2-3 on the 3rd floor of the Culp Center. For more information about ETSU-Con or helping with the event, email etsuconofficial@gmail.com.
