ETSU’s men’s golf team kicked off their spring semester schedule in sunny Puerto Rico from Sunday, Feb.y 13, to Tuesday, Feb. 15 to compete in the Puerto Rico Classic.
At the end of day one sophomore Ben Carberry (Bonnybridge, Scotland) led the team managing to play a career-low round of 66 (-6). Sophomore Remi Chartier (Montreal, Canada) posted a 4-under-par (68) in the opening round. Chartier’s day started on hole 5 where he got three consecutive pars following a birdie on par-3 eighth.
Sophomore Archie Davies (Carlisle, England) and freshman Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) were the final two golfers for the team score of the day. Ending their day one play, Ege with even-par (72) and Davies with 2-under-par (70).
On day two of the classic, Davies took the lead for the Bucs, finishing the day 3-under-par (69) and climbing 10 spots individually tying for 24th. Ege was close behind kicking off the day with back-to-back bogeys and a birdie on par-3 eighth hole. Carberry had four birdies finishing the day an even-par (72).
At the end of day two, the team carded a 284 (-4) but still fell six spots going into day three, the final day, placing at 10th.
Chartier took home the low score for the Bucs on day three of the tournament. Carding a 5-under-par (67). The team finished in ninth place ending with a 12-under-par (276).
Only one of the Bucs, freshman Jack Tickle (Bristol, Tennessee) was playing only as an individual for the tournament. Tickle ended day one with a career-low for him 69 (-3). Maintaining his strong start, he had two birdies and one bogey on day 2 and finished the day tied for 32nd with a score of 4-under-par. On the final day, Tickle finished the tournament tied for 44th with 5 other players including teammate Ege.
Davies took the highest individual place in a nine-way tie for 22nd.
The next play for the Bucs will be on Monday, March 7, and Tuesday, March 8 at the Wake Forest Invitational.
