The ETSU Counseling Center recently hosted their first Fearless Writing Workshop for students on campus.
Rebecca Alexander, associate director of clinical services, organized the event for students looking for an inner connection and creativity.
“The goal of Fearless Writing is to offer a creative source for speaking our truths and telling our stories,” said Alexander.
The workshop will continue to meet for the rest of the semester (excluding the week of spring break) every Wednesday from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Counseling Center Group Room (Room 337) in the Culp Student Center. During each meeting, there will be allotted time for a free writing session followed by a period for students to share their writing with the group.
Alexander encourages students to give the workshop a try as the health benefits and overall purpose of the Fearless Writing group is for healing and changing, something that we all need from time to time.
“By writing with a pen on paper, it supports a mind-body connection. It is a form of mindfulness similar to meditation – it can provide a space and time where a person can listen to their own voice, and give non-judgemental compassionate attention to their whole experiences,” she said.
For students seeking mental health benefits but still uncomfortable with the idea of sharing their writing, Alexander encourages them to participate in journaling at home by setting time aside for a 20-minute free write.
“If we do not tell our story, it will be lost. All of our lives are important and unique, and deserve to be honored and heard,” said Alexander.
