East Tennessee State University informed Women’s Basketball Head Coach Simon Harris of their intent to terminate Harris’s employment Monday.

This announcement comes after former members of the women’s basketball team filed a Title IX complaint about discrimination and unfair treatment in the spring semester.

ETSU President Brian Noland described the findings as a serious concern, displaying “unconscionable behavior by Coach Harris that is in direct contradiction to the institution’s mission and values.”

A final compliance report is being provided to the women’s basketball team members today.

“The report details multiple ethical and policy violations and raises questions regarding potential failures to comply with NCAA rules,” Noland continued. “Subsequently, I have directed Interim Athletic Director, Dr. Richard Sander, to begin an investigation into whether or not NCAA violations have occurred. In the spirit of self-accountability promoted by the NCAA, we will report any potential findings immediately.”

According to an email sent out by Noland to ETSU faculty and staff, Harris has been directed to not interact with current or prospective student athletics or other athletics department members.

“The findings outlined in the report have caused me serious concern, as it paints a picture of unconscionable behavior by Coach Harris that is in direct contradiction to the institution’s mission and values,” said Noland.

An acting head coach will be appointed by Sander and likely be announced later this week.

In a letter to the campus community, Noland announced the resignation of Athletics Director Scott Carter earlier Monday.
