The ETSU Department of Sustainability has implemented a recycling initiative into William B. Greene Jr. Stadium. At the start of the year, new recycling bins were added to the stadium, encouraging football fans to help create a greener campus.

“In the future, I would love to work towards a more zero-waste football game aspect where we incorporate compost and more recycling options,” said Erica Malpass, sustainability coordinator.

After realizing the need for a replacement, the Department of Sustainability reached out to a company that specialized in creating bins made from recycled milk jugs. A large focus of this initiative was to push for a greener alternative, while still maintaining a look that fit the atmosphere of the stadium.

Each bin is made from 1,450 reclaimed milk jugs, sporting a blue color and the ETSU symbol on the side. The front of the bins have interchangeable inserts to show what materials can be recycled, such as plastic, bottles, mixed paper and cardboard. There is also a standard landfill bin for non-recyclable garbage as well.

“There’s simple things you can do, and if anyone has any ideas that they would like to see incorporated on campus, I am always more than welcome to hear them out and see what we can do,” said Malpass. “I want to make this campus as green as possible.”
