The ETSU men’s soccer team played the Radford Highlanders on Sept. 27 in a non-conference match inside Cupp Stadium. An impressive showing by the Bucs resulted in a 3-0 shutout victory.
ETSU wasted no time as they scored in minute five of the match. Cameron Carroll (Clarksville, Tennessee) scored the first goal of the night while Kieran Richards (Hamilton, New Zealand) was awarded the assist on what was Carroll’s first goal of the season.
After Carroll’s goal, the Bucs were locked in a defensive battle between the Highlanders, holding onto a 1-0 lead. The Bucs only allowed three shots in the first half of play while goalkeeper Cole Hunter (Mount Juliet, Tennessee) recorded a save.
ETSU started the second half aggressively, recording eight shots in hopes of expanding their lead. After nearly 70 minutes went by since the last goal, ETSU jumped ahead 2-0. Gabriel Ramos (Sao Paulo) scored his second goal of the season while Lucas Lightner (Clarksville, Tennessee) recorded the assist. The Bucs only allowed one shot on target off of three shots by Radford in the second half.
In the final minute of the game, Carroll’s foot strikes again as he becomes one of three ETSU players to complete a brace this season. This put the Bucs up 3-0 and was the clinching shot of the game.
Radford had their chances to score with an 11-7 advantage in corner kicks and six shots on the night. ETSU outshot the Highlanders 14-6 and 6-2 with shots on target. Hunter ended the night with a pair of stops for the Bucs.
The Bucs also opened up conference play on Sept. 30 with a 3-0 win against VMI. This puts ETSU’s record at (5-3-1) (1-0-0). The Bucs will play Virginia Tech on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. inside Summers-Taylor Stadium, where they are 3-1.
