This past Friday night, a handful of people from UKirk, a campus ministry, went to Kingsport to help Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church set up a pumpkin patch.

I have a few friends in the church and had nothing to do. Naturally, I was dragged along. About forty to fifty people from various churches in the area showed up to help. We were supposed to start unloading the truck at 4 p.m., but due to traffic and a couple of other problems, the driver arrived around 6:30. UKirk had, in the meantime, decided to get something to eat at a local Mexican restaurant.

Unfortunately, the driver who delivered the pumpkins either didn’t speak English or didn’t speak it very well. One of the UKirk students saved the day, conversing in Spanish with the driver. Once we obtained the pumpkins, we worked for an hour. Then, the sky cleared up to reveal the brightest double rainbow that I’ve ever seen. We stopped to take pictures and rest. Those pumpkins were really heavy!

While we worked, we all talked and I met some alumni and one of the digital media professors, Professor Marlow. Suffice to say, they were all so nice and I couldn’t have had a better time. It was completely dark by the time we finished around 9 pm, but we had 900 pumpkins on display, not including the small ones. It was hard, but rewarding, work.

Colonial Heights Presbyterian Church will be selling these pumpkins throughout the month of October, and all of the proceeds are going to non-profit organizations and youth ministries. Stop by and enjoy the display.
