Through Dec. 9, the international “FL3THC3R Exhibit: Social & Politically Engaged Art” will be housed in The Reece Museum.

Each year, this art exhibition focuses on political and social art. For this year’s exhibition, the art will be specifically focusing on visual works depicting human rights, such as women’s rights, the war in Ukraine and gun laws.

The exhibit was established by Barb, Wayne and Carrie Dyer. They established this exhibit in honor of their son and brother Fletcher Dyer, who was a senior at East Tennessee State University in 2009 and tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident.

The 2022 juror is Wesam Mazhar Haddad, a creative and art director of the New Jersey poster competition known as “Poster Stellars.” Haddad has won several awards on a global level.

“As an artist and graphic designer, Fletcher’s passion for art was a vehicle that allowed him to mirror his passion and marry to his concern for social and political issues through visual means. Fletcher was always curious and aware of current events; he experimented in innovative ways to create works that investigate contemporary social issues,” the FL3THC3R website says.

This year, two new awards will be given to artists, including a celebratory award to honor the exhibition’s 10th anniversary and another to support visual arts concerning protection of human rights. This exhibit also focuses on deconstructing racism and the support of people of color.

The exhibition will award more than $2,000 in awards at the exhibition reception at The Reece Museum on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2022 at 5 p.m.

According to the FL3TCH3R website, “The Reece is proud to once again welcome the ‘FL3TCH3R Exhibit’ to the museum. Now more than ever, providing a welcoming space for these social and political works to be viewed, experienced, and discussed is so very important.”

The Reece Museum is located on the campus of East Tennessee State University and is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, please visit http://www.etsu.edu/reece or phone (423) 439-4392.
