For the first time in university history, ETSU’s Model United Nations Club will be holding its very own Model UN Conference on Oct. 22. The conference, named “BucMUN,” will invite outside schools to participate in this day-long event taking place in Rogers-Stout Hall.
The Model United Nations club at ETSU (shortened as Model UN) provides a way for students to become acquainted with the United Nations and its global agendas. In doing so, club members partake in mock simulations where they imitate real-life diplomatic affairs, subsequently preparing them for regional and national conferences.
“It’s relatively similar to an actual UN meeting, although we like to think our meetings are more fun and get things done faster,” said Julianne Barteck, Model UN treasurer.
During a typical Model UN meeting, a majority of the time is spent in a caucus, where delegates move amongst the room and discuss the topic. Simultaneously, delegates write resolutions, which are then, in turn, voted on towards the close of the meeting.
“Model UN is an inclusive environment that does not necessarily require you to be a political science or similar major,” said Hannah Parry, Model UN secretary. “I’m a biology major and have a leadership position. All that is necessary is that you have an interest in world affairs and/or respectful debate.”
Delegates in ETSU’s Model UN club will also participate in UNCMUNC XIII in Chapel Hill this November and hope to do a MUN Capture the Flag sometime later in the same month. In the future, the group wishes to host or join smaller-scale events, as well as other conferences.
The Model United Nations club meets every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Rogers-Stout Hall, room 303. If you are interested in joining or want more information on the group, follow along on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/etsumodelun/.
