With Halloweekend approaching fast, it is crucial to stay safe, aware and prepared, especially in the event of an emergency. The Department of Public Safety at ETSU, dedicated to the protection of the campus community, provides several initiatives for the safety of students.

The ETSU Safe app offers a variety of resources for students, including a way for students to swiftly call for help simply by opening the app and pressing “Emergency Call.” The app also provides easily-accessible information for different types of crises or emergencies under a tab labeled “Emergency Plans.” Additionally, it features several convenient maps, including transit and BucShot routes and one just of campus itself. ETSU Safe is available for free in both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Safe Voyage is a shuttle service that provides emergency escorts when needed. Said escorts can be arranged at any time of day or night by calling 423-439-4480. Additionally, Public Safety offers quick assistance if you are locked out of your car or have a dead battery.

In terms of the upcoming holiday, ETSU’s Lt. Jennifer Mayberry lists several instructions to stay safe and aware: Never accept a beverage from someone you do not know; never – even for a second – leave your drink unattended; and know your limits when drinking. Plus, needless to say, never drive after drinking.

“Be kind but cautious,” said Lt. Jennifer Mayberry. “College can be an incredibly social place, but be on your toes when meeting new people who are wearing costumes, especially outfits that hide their faces or change their voices.”

Within the resident halls on campus, there is always at least one Resident Advisor on duty, whose role is to ensure the safety and welfare of students.

“If you see something suspicious, then report it to your RA or call Public Safety,” said Dane Anthony, Resident Advisor. “RAs are the best resource that the resident halls have to offer and are at no expense to the student.”

This weekend – and always – know your resources, trust your instincts and stay safe, Bucs.
