Over a month ago, ETSU SGA President Mason Mosier sent out an email to the student body addressing a circulating petition regarding the Basler Center for Physical Activity’s (CPA) workout dress code. As of Nov. 2, the policy has been changed based on student interaction and working with the university.

The petition about the dress code garnered nearly 1,500 signatures after being shared with the whole student body. The petition was created by Kiera Snyder, a member of the university’s track and field team.

“I can say with pride today that because of students like Kiera Snyder, our entire SGA executive team and senate, and in collaboration with administration, we have once again delivered another win to students,” Mosier said in a recent email.

The dress code now states “an athletic top that covers the chest and an athletic bottom that covers the buttocks” must be worn, according to the email sent out by Campus Recreation this week. The email outlined health, safety and attire expectations for the different locations throughout the CPA.

While CPA members are required to wipe down equipment after use, they are also expected to wipe down equipment before, use a mat when using the floor or indoor turf space and cover up wounds to participate in Campus Recreation activities. Members are also expected to refrain from using equipment when they have contagious infections such as ringworm, MRSA or staph.

This dress code directly impacts students, who pay $43 per semester supporting the Department of Campus Recreation, according to ETSU’s Marketing and Communications. The CPA also saw nearly 7,000 visitors in the first week of the Fall 2022 semester.

“This only happened because you, the students, decided to speak up. It has been the honor of my life to represent you, and I am proud that this administration is just getting started,” Mosier concluded.

At the end of the Campus Recreation email, they announced the CPA will close Dec. 10 and tentatively open back up on Jan. 14, 2023, due to renovations. New flooring and indoor turf will be installed, plus new squat racks, bumper plates, bench press stations, AbSolo and TireFlip180 machines.
