The organizations Volunteer ETSU and Alpha Epsilon Delta are collaborating together for a project that will be serving the Johnson City Downtown Day Center.
The week of Nov. 14 will be Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week. To honor that week, the organizations will be distributing numerous goodie bags to the center.
Elayna Chavis, president of Volunteer ETSU, explained more about the Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week.
“The Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week service project will entail a full week of student participation in showing empathy and compassion for those experiencing hunger and homelessness in the Johnson City and campus community,” Chavis said.
It will be Chavis’ third year over the project; the first Hunger and Homelessness Week began in 1975.
“Our goodie bag project will benefit both the students and the community, as the students become educated on the state of homelessness within our local area,” Chavis said.
If one is wondering how to contribute and what items are needed in the goodie bags, it will be basic necessities for winter and essential living.
The goodie bags will include: hand and toe warmers, body wipes, toothpaste and toothbrush, reusable water bottles, soft snacks, rain ponchos, toboggans and deodorant.
There will also be volunteers aiding in delivering the goodie bags, so one would not need to take it to the center themselves.
“The community receives our volunteer’s assistance in both service as well as distributing the bags to those in need,” Chavis said.
Chavis expects that around 50 goodie bags will be distributed.
To donate, visit the Carrier Center, Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement or room 222 by Nov. 10.
