The Center for Physical Activity is revamping the space with a new look and more equipment.

Commonly known as the CPA, the Center for Physical Activity has been up and running since April 2002.

Kari Albarado, director of Campus Recreation, explains what the changes will bring.

“The weight room floor is original to the building,” Albarado said. “The life cycle of a weight room floor is 15-20 years, so it was time for us to replace.”

Albarado explains that a new weight room floor this has been on the CPA wish list for some time.

Albarado met with a flooring company, PLAE, and she is optimistic about the outcome.

“We will be working with PLAE, which has a great flooring product that is proprietary,” Albarado said. “I anticipate students will like the modern look that is branded with ETSU logos and paired with technology that will include lifting platforms that are built flush to the floor.”

Albarado met PLAE in 2017 in hope of bringing their product to the CPA. The weight room floor will not be the only change, though.

“In addition to the weight room floor, the flooring by the racquetball court will be transformed from carpet to the same material as the weight room floor,” Albarado said.

There will also be new squat racks supplied by PLAE, making the CPA the second collegiate recreation center to have them. New dedicated indoor turf training space will be added with equipment included.

“This space will include TireFlip machines, kettlebells, TRX systems, weight sleds, battle ropes and much more,” Albarado said.

But that is not all, because the supplier Matrix will supply even more equipment than listed.

“In addition to the floor, we will have new bench press stations from Matrix, as well as new cable machines,” Albarado said. “Matrix will also be the supplier for much of the equipment and racks for the indoor turf space.”

The CPA will close at 6 p.m. on Dec. 10 to begin work on the new amenities. The reopening will happen on Jan. 14.
