The town of Jonesborough kicked off its holiday season celebrations on Nov. 26 with the Whoville Christmas event. It was the first of many festive weekends to come, with different themes intended for family entertainment.

“The Christmas in Olde Jonesborough series has been going on for over 20 years. We want to have something for everyone. Most events are to bring everyone from the community together like the Christmas parade and the Lighting of the Tree Ceremony,” said Nora Davis, marketing and events coordinator.

On every Saturday through Dec. 17, there will be special events such as caroling, visits with Santa and extended shopping hours. The upcoming themes include Doggone Christmas, Santa’s Christmas Village, and the annual Christmas Parade that will take place on Dec. 10, at 6 p.m.

For the Doggone Christmas festivities (Dec 3., 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.), everyone is encouraged to bring their pets along for the day, and there will be opportunities for your furry friends to take photos with Santa. There will also be a variety of competitions throughout the day such as Ugliest Christmas Dog Sweater, Best Holiday Costume and the Pet and Owner Look-alike contest.

Santa’s Christmas Village (Dec. 10, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) is for younger children, and there will be many family-friendly activities, including cookie decorating and face painting.

“We have these events to bring our community together. Community is an integral part of Jonesborough. It is amazing to see everyone gathering on Main Street to celebrate. We also like to see the support of the small businesses that make up our community as well,” Davis said.

Jonesborough is just a quick trip down the road from ETSU’s campus, and students are welcomed to visit the town and join in on the holiday celebrations.

“We have many great shops for students to explore. We also have events for most holidays and something happening almost every weekend. I think students can enjoy Chocolate Fest, St. Paddy’s Day, Pumpkin Fest, and Brews & Boos,” Davis said.
