On Wednesday, Dec. 14, ETSU Interim Athletic Director Dr. Richard Sander announced Cheryl Milligan as the interim softball head coach.

Milligan has spent 25 years in coaching,18 years as a head coach, with four of those years being served at Army.

“I want to thank Dr. (Brian) Noland, Dr. (Richard) Sander, and the ETSU Athletic Department for this opportunity,” said Milligan. “I am excited to join the ETSU family and move forward with this group of student-athletes to help accomplish their goals on and off the field.”

Milligan was a 1995 Tufts graduate, where she played as a four-year starter at shortstop. She finished all four seasons with a total of 90 wins and with a 31-5 conclusion to her senior year. Her record of .377 ranks 11th in all-time program history, as well as 11th all-time runs score at 119.

She began coaching at her alma mater in 1998, where she spent the first six seasons as an assistant coach. She took over as head coach from 2004 to 2018. Under her leadership, the Tufts ranked in the top-20 all-time in NCAA single-season winning percentage three different times.

“We are excited to have Coach Milligan take over leadership of our softball program,” said Sander. “She comes to ETSU with a lot of experience and has been successful at various levels during her career. She had an outstanding career as a student-athlete, won National Championships as a coach at Tufts, and led some of the most honored and disciplined student-athletes at Army. We look forward to her instilling her values here at ETSU.”
