Ben Gilliam served as a general assignment reporter for the East Tennessean from 2020 to 2021. Some of his biggest stories included the SGA presidential race results, local protests, and updates from the university president.

Gilliam graduated from ETSU in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in media and communication. In his current role, he works for WJHL as a digital reporter. He pitches and executes in-depth story ideas and helps drive traffic and engagement for their online content.

“I am able to focus on breaking and enterprise coverage with the opportunity to work from an office or the field. The proximity to my family and current location is a big draw as well,” he mentioned. “I’m able to connect with my community in ways I never expected, and every day is something new.”

He credits the East Tennessean for the networking skills he acquired and uses daily at WJHL.

“The East Tennessean taught me how to forge relationships and make connections across campus, which is invaluable as a reporter,” said Gilliam. “Everyone has a role to play at ETSU, and learning how to recognize that role is extremely useful.”
