On Jan. 21, the ETSU women’s basketball team traveled to Spartanburg to take on Southern Conference foe Wofford. The Lady Bucs picked up the win on the road in convincing fashion, with a final score of 75-58. ETSU improves to 15-6 overall with a 2-3 record in conference play.
After starting the game on an 8-0 run, the Lady Bucs looked to take control of the game early. In just the first two minutes of the game, Jakhyia Davis (Knoxville, Tennessee) had four points and four rebounds while the defense held Wofford scoreless for nearly the first four minutes of the game. By the end of the first quarter, Davis had seven rebounds. Wofford battled back, taking an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Bucs shot the ball efficiently at 60 percent, going 9-15 from the field. At the end of the half, the Bucs were up by one in a back-and-forth game from each team.
Coming back from the half, Coach Brenda Mock Brown had her team ready to take control of the game. ETSU outscored Wofford 26-8 to take a 19-point lead. Courtney Moore (Gainesville, Florida) had three triples in the third quarter alone to help the Bucs establish their lead.
In the fourth quarter, Wofford could not complete the comeback as the Bucs took a 22-point lead with 8:35 left to go in the game. ETSU’s Jiselle Thomas (Norwalk, Ohio) had a game high 23 points on 9-18 shooting. Jakhyia Davis recorded the double-double for the Bucs with 10 points and 12 boards in 24 minutes of playing time.
After a two-game road trip, the Bucs return to Brooks Gym in hopes of extending their winning streak to 3. In what will be their first meeting of the season, Western Carolina comes to town for another Southern Conference game for the Lady Bucs. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a bucket hat, and tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
