ETSU’s Martin Center for the Arts kicked off its first Broadway season with the showing of “Annie” on Jan. 25 and 26.

“Annie” is currently on tour throughout the United States and made its stop in Johnson City to wow two packed houses. The show is a beloved classic that has passed its way from generation to generation. Annie inspires all theatre-goers with the idea that, “Sunshine is always right around the corner,” as stated on the tour’s website.

Jennifer Clements, executive director for the Martin Center, welcomed patrons in as they entered the doors of the Martin Center. Clements mentioned how excited she was for the grand opening of their first Broadway Series.

Sara Allen, director of sales and marketing for the Martin Center, shared her excitement with Clements as she too welcomed in the many patrons.

The show resonates the celebration of family, the American spirit and optimism as Annie navigates her life during the cold holidays. Annie’s holding onto hope, despite being an orphan, that one day she will have a family pays off. The whole show, the audience is rooting for Annie and wanting only the best for her. The show will keep you interested the entire time.

It is a roller coaster of emotions between laughing your head off at the shenanigans that occur between the girls and Miss Hannigan, followed by the meddling of Hannigan’s brother, Rooster, and his girlfriend, Lily. The connection between all the performers is outstanding. They truly portray the emotions that the audience feels towards the characters on stage. The audience was in awe of the amount of work that went into putting on this show.
