Alaina O’Neal worked for the East Tennessean from 2008 to 2012. She served as a sports editor, scene editor and executive editor during her time with the publication.

O’Neal graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in digital media.

She is currently self-employed as a freelance graphic designer. She runs a regional travel blog called TheSmokies.com and is business partners with her sister, Morgan Overholt. Overholt served as the executive editor of the East Tennessean from 2006 to 2007. Their business has been featured in several publications including Business Insider.

“It’s absolutely liberating being able to be your own boss and set your own hours,” said O’Neal. “The sky is the limit, and that is very exciting.” She mentions that her sister was a huge role model and started her on the path  of less-traditional employment. “I haven’t looked back since,” said O’Neal.”

As she continues to write about her journey in the Smoky Mountains, she continues to reflect on her experiences at the East Tennessean.

“I use skills from the East Tennessean almost every day,” said O’Neal. “No matter what project I’m working on, I’m either designing, editing or writing.”
