ETSU football has made some changes in the offseason so far, including new assistant coaches and positional staff changes. Jay Guillermo will enter his first season at ETSU as the offensive line coach for the new-look Buccaneers.
Guillermo brings a championship attitude to the program as he has played in two College Football Playoff National Championship title games for the Clemson Tigers. Guillermo helped his team secure the national title in 2016 against Alabama.
Guillermo was a captain in his last two seasons, playing the center position. Along with that, he earned four ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week and two All-ACC honors. In 2016, he was named to the watch list for the Dave Rimington Award, an award that goes out to the top center in college football. Guillermo was also a two-time state champion in high school, playing for Maryville High.
Guillermo worked out for the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans NFL rookie minicamps after he graduated from Clemson. In May of 2017, he signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. In the summer of 2017, Guillermo retired from football to pursue a career in coaching.
Guillermo already has several years of coaching experience under his belt. He began his coaching career at Burns High as the offensive lineman coach. In 2019, he spent one year at Georgia State, again as the offensive line coach. While at Georgia State, he helped lead the team to the best offense in school history, averaging over 245 rushing yards per game.
After a brief stop there, he spent two seasons at Western Carolina as the tight ends coach. Most recently he spent time at the University of Virginia as an offensive graduate assistant.
Guillermo clearly brings a lot of football knowledge with him to ETSU, from his time as both a stellar athlete and respected coach.
