On April 14-15, ETSU will be hosting the Iterations Total Art Conference in Ball Hall. The conference is directed by Sage Perrott and Johnathan Strube, in collaboration with students and faculty in the Department of Art and Design.

“Iterations is created for art and design students. It is created to engage students with communities of professional art and design practice. It is centered on multi-disciplinary artists, designers, makers, career paths and opportunities in art and design,” says Johnathan Strube, co-chair of the event.

The conference includes a diverse range of keynote speakers, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, portfolio reviews and social experiences in downtown Johnson City, engaging with community art and public works installed by the Johnson City Public Art committee.

“This event will also highlight the work of ETSU Department of Art & Design students. During the event, local galleries will present work from undergraduates, graduates, alumni, and faculty,” noted Strube.

Day one will touch on Community Building. Keynote speakers will include Natalia Arbelaez, Rick Griffith and Victoria Sambunaris. Kate Bingaman-Burt and Jamaal Barber will hands-on workshops. Panel discussions will include presentations and round-table talks with Annie Evelyn, Isaac Duncan III and Kristen Necessary.

Day two will discuss Multi-Disciplinary Practice with Shae Bishop, Michael Dickins and Katie Hargrave. It will also conclude portfolio reviews by regional artists and designers Jonathan Adams, Art Brown and Katie Murphy.

“We would like people to know that this conference is free and open to all students, not just ETSU students. It is created for students, yet it is created to produce professional-level dialogue for an accessible price,” says Strube. “The event is a service to the Appalachian highlands art and design community—created to support students and professionals alike. This is the first iteration of Iterations, made possible by a Mary B. Martin School of the Arts grant.”
