Welcome to the column to go to when you’re a broke, tired college student in a dorm. Today’s
food is more of a breakfast: french toast.

The ingredients are as follows:
Smart Way brand bread is $1.52 a loaf and has 24 pieces in it, costing .06 cents per slice. This
brand comes in white and wheat varieties.
Kroger brand large eggs are $2.18 a dozen, costing .18 cents an egg
Private Selection Butter is $3.82 a package with 14 servings costing .27 per pat. It comes in
multiple options, but for french toast, I’d highly recommend the Honney and Cinnamon one,
since the other selections are savory.
Kroger Whole Milk $1.52 per pint
Kroger Imitation Rum is $2.51 per vial. Alternatively, if you are of age and happen to drink rum,
cream sherry, or spiced brandy, just use that instead.
Kroger Imitation Vanilla is $2.18 a vial
Kroger Ground Cinnamon is $3.27 a box
Kroger Ground Clove is $6.56 a box
Note that while spices are expensive up front, they keep a long time and can be reused for
multiple dishes over a long period of time.
The total amount to get all of this together up front is $21.52, the highest we’ve seen this article.
However, this is only .56 cents per serving to make. This is because many of these ingredients
are bought in bulk.

What you’ll need to do:
Crack a single egg into a bowl and whisk with a tablespoon of milk. Then, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract and a ¼ teaspoon of rum extract, and whisk again. Finally, whisk in your ground cloves and cinnamon. Put in a slice of bread to soak. In a pan on medium low heat, spray down your pan with nonstick spray and put a tablespoon of butter in the pan. Once the butter is melted, place your soaked bread in the pan for around a minute before flipping and waiting for a minute. After that, your french toast is done. Your egg batter will be able to use up to four pieces if you fancy.
