Hannah Smith worked for the East Tennessean from 2021 to 2022. During her time with the publication, she was a general assignment reporter.
Smith graduated in 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in both theatre and communication disorders, with a focus on pre-speech language pathology.
She is currently a part of the speech pathology graduate program at ETSU. Outside of the classroom, Smith works with ETSU Disability Services in the MentorMe! Program. She helps undergraduate students with disabilities become connected to campus, seek out all available resources, manage their coursework and learn how to become successful in professional development and future careers.
“When applying for GA’s [graduate assistantships], I was drawn to this job because I loved working with students during my time in undergraduate [studies],” said Smith. “As a disabled person myself, I love the opportunity to help others be successful and achieve their goals at ETSU.”
Smith was part of the Preview and Orientation Leader Organization and a Buccanner Involvement Guide during her undergraduate studies. She has found that these positions have helped her build connections with a diverse group of students in her current job.
“[The East Tennessean] taught me tactics I can use in my schooling and work: time management, flexibility, professional writing and editing skills,” said Smith. “[It] helped me build connections with multiple different departments, organizations and faculty members that I have been able to pass along to the students I mentor as they need them.”
