The women’s tennis team continues their winning streak with a 6-1 win over the University of Tennessee Chattanooga on Saturday, April 8, while celebrating the last home match and senior day. 

Gameplay started with UTC securing the first win with doubles team Nicole Abel and Callie Billman, defeating ETSU’s graduate student Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina) and graduate student Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) 6-3. Following this game, senior Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) and graduate student Mariya Shumeika (Minsk, Belarus) earned the first doubles win for ETSU against Caroline Gibbens and Jessie Young with a score of 6-4.  

The final doubles match resulted in another win for ETSU, earning them a point. Junior Fernanda Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico) and sophomore Daniela Rivera (Maturin, Venezuela) defeated Rozalie Dohnalova and Lucia Melendez in a close 7-6 match. Carvajal and Rivera have maintained a 14-4 record together for the season. 

During singles, Carvajal earned the first win against Abel with a score of 6-2, 6-1. The second win for the Bucs was by Shumeika, who earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Gibbens. The next singles match to finish earned UTC a singles win with Dohnalova, defeating Buccaneer Alfaro 6-4, 6-4. The final two singles matches resulted in wins for ETSU. Bakhodirova defeated Young 6-2, 7-6 bumping her win streak to six games. Rivera defeated Billman 6-4, 7-6 as well with a win streak of eight games in singles. 

The Bucs celebrated four graduating seniors during the match: three graduate students Emilia Alfaro, Yunuen Elizarraras, Mariya Shumeika, and undergraduate student Laylo Bakhodirova. 

The Bucs also beat Western Carolina University 7-0 on Tuesday, April 11 in Cullowhee, North Carolina. Currently, the team record is 16-6 overall, with a 6-0 conference record.

The final match of the regular season will be on Saturday, April 15 against conference opponent Furman in Greenville, South Carolina.
