Last Friday, ETSU men’s soccer accepted a tough 2-1 loss against UNC Chapel Hill in front of a massive crowd of fans. Over 1,120 fans came to support the Bucs at Summers-Taylor Stadium in the third home game of the season. Last year, the Bucs lost to the Tar Heels in their stadium 0-1.
The Bucs began strong with one goal in the first half of the game, scored by Gabriel Ramos (São Paulo, Brazil) and assisted by Sebastian Reventlow-Mourier (Viborg, Denmark). The ball rolled right through the legs of the UNC goalkeeper, Collin Travasos. As the Tar Heels kept up the pressure, the Bucs held their own in the first half and took the lead.
The second half saw an aggressive and passionate start from both teams. Henrik Guenther (Guetersloh, Germany) was yellow-carded for a penalty a mere inch in the 18-yard box. Tar Heels player Quenzi Heuerman scored the penalty goal with a left-footer in the upper left post.
Bucs goalie Cole Hunter (Mount. Juliet, Tenn.) saved 16 of the 18 shots on goal by UNC. Hunter brought his A-game, diving left, right, and snagging some fantastic saves throughout the whole game. The crowd went wild with every shot Hunter saved. Unfortunately, within the 75th minute of the game, Hunter tried and failed to clear the ball down the field. UNC player David Bercedo used his body to turn toward the ball, which rebounded off his thigh and into the goal.
UNC outshot ETSU 18-5, with ETSU’s two shots on UNC goalie Travasos. The two shots were claimed by Ramos and Tarik Pannholzer (Flensburg, Germany).
