ETSU volleyball had a conference game against Chattanooga on Sept. 29 and lost in four sets in a competitive match at Brooks Gym.

In the first set, both teams went back and forth and ended with seven lead changes. Both offenses came out on the attack, as the teams combined for a total of 33 kills in just the first set. Chattanooga took the first set 26-24 in a close one.

In the second set, ETSU answered back with a 25-12 score to take the second set. Brianna Cantrell (Appleton, Wis.) had four kills, and Amanda Lowe had three of her own. Chattanooga had no answer for the Bucs’ offensive attack in the second set.

In the third set, the two teams interlocked themselves in a competitive game that saw the lead change 15 times. ETSU pulled ahead 28-27 after a Chattanooga service point error. After that, the Mocs were able to take the next three points and take the third set 30-28.

“Chattanooga is a strong team that does a lot of things really well.  I thought that our team did also. When you look at the scores, we had the opportunity to win this match in 3 sets, but unfortunately, we were unable to finish out the 1st and 3rd sets that went into extra points.  We learned a lot from this match, and we will continue to push to be better the next time,” said head coach Bruce Atkinson.

In the fourth set, ETSU established a 10-3 lead and looked to bounce back from a back-and-forth third set. Chattanooga crept back and eventually tied the score at 17-17. Shortly after, the Mocs jumped out to a 19-17 lead. Chattanooga was able to take the final set 25-20.

ETSU falls to 1-14 overall and 1-3 in SoCon play and will face Mercer in another SoCon matchup on Oct. 6 in Macon, Georgia. The first serve is set for 6 p.m.
