ETSU’s own Mock Trial team won first place at a recent event. Students also won individual awards this past weekend.
From Oct. 20-22, ETSU’s Mock Trial team traveled to Atlanta to compete in their first-ever invitational, the Owl Classic.
The American Mock Trial Association releases a case at the start of the semester, allowing the teams to prepare for the trial all semester. ETSU’s team started working at the very beginning of this semester, with tryouts at the beginning of September.
Trent White, SGA president and Mock Trial Team member, stated, “Students are tasked with crafting legal arguments, working with witnesses and arguing case theories in court.”
ETSU’s Mock Trial has only been in existence for two academic years. The team was formed last year in October, and this past weekend’s tournament, the Owl Classic, marked the second time ETSU’s Mock Trial team competed against another team.
The Owl Classic tournament was hosted by Kennesaw State University at the John Marshall School of Law in Atlanta, Georgia. ETSU’s team competed against a total of eleven teams, including teams from Kennesaw State University, UNC Charlotte, Auburn University, Mercer University and Middle Tennessee State University.
ETSU’s team won first place overall, scoring higher than all the other teams.
“When we heard that we won, everyone screamed in excitement. Most students on the team had never even competed before, so securing this victory was a momentous occasion,” said White.
On top of the team’s win, three students won their own individual awards. Both Kyah Powers and Trent White won awards for Outstanding Attorney, and PJ Davis was awarded Outstanding Witness.
As the Mock Trial team continues to work and attain new heights, you can support them by trying out for the team next year or follow them on Instagram at @etsumocktrial.
