GREENVILLE, S.C. (Oct. 28, 2023) – ETSU kept the game close, but ultimately, No. 3 Furman improved their record to 7-1 with their 16-8 win over the Buccaneers. ETSU’s record drops to 2-6, putting them 7th in the SoCon standings. Now, they’re only ahead of The Citadel and Wofford, who are both 0-8 on the year.
ETSU’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Teddy Wilson (Edenton, N.C.) blocked a punt that was scooped up and returned by redshirt junior Ton’Quez Ball (Knoxville, Tenn.). Ball was a three-star recruit from South Doyle HS and initially played for Tulane University before transferring to ETSU prior to the 2021 season.
Furman also only scored one touchdown, which came in the form of a third-quarter 22-yard connection from Tyler Huff (Orange Park, Fl.) to Joshua Harris (Newnan, Ga.).
Although the Bucs lost the game, the ETSU defense kept them in until the end, holding Furman to just 16 points, the fewest points the team has scored all season. ETSU’s leading tacklers on the day were LB Stephen Scott (Greensboro, N.C.) with nine tackles, then DB Sheldon Arnold II (Loganville, Ga.) and DB Chris Hope (Madison, Ala.), both with eight.
On the offensive side of the ball, ETSU running back Trey Foster (Knoxville, Tenn.) was the leading rusher, recording a career-high 80 yards on 12 carries.
Next, ETSU (2-6) will play against VMI (3-5) at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium on Nov. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
