The ETSU men’s golf team was able to hold onto a two-day invitational lead over the Wake Forrest Demon Deacons, earlier this week. Coming into day one, the Bucs were ranked 15th in the national, with an impressive 69-17-1 record. The Deacons, ranked 40th nationally, with a struggling 28-41-1 record of their own. Junior, Algot Kleen (Fiskebackskil, Sweden) was able to hold onto double leads following the first two rounds of the Wake Forrest Invitational.
Half of the 14 total teams who made the journey to the invitational, were in the top 50 nationally ranked. Including the likes of the Southeastern Conference’s number one team in the country, The Auburn Tigers. In part of the Bucs performances on the first day, ETSU men’s golf will take a two-shot lead into Tuesday’s final round. Posting an 8-over-par 568 (287-281) through the first two rounds of competition. The Auburn and Clemson Tigers, alongside the Northwestern Wildcats, were amongst the other teams who would round out the top five in play.
The Bucs would lead the field in birdies, totaling 31, while also earning the top score on the par-4s with an overall average of 4.10. Graduate student, Remi Chartier (Montreal, Canada) would go on to post a two on the par-4s, 473-yard No. 14 in round one.
Redshirt Senior, Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) was one of two total golfers to shoot even-par 140, while three additional shots were off the pace in a tie for fifth. Ege was fortunate to be named one of the 15 golfers to the Haskins Award Spring Watch List earlier in the day, totaling a 71-70 on day one.
Sophomore, Matthew Dodd-Berry (Wirral, England), alongside redshirt freshman, Jenson Forrester (Wolverhampton, England) would go onto to tie for 32nd overall at 7-over-par 147.
The Buccaneer’s will be paired with Wake Forest and Auburn in the final round on Tuesday, March 5.
