Members all around the community will come together to make Johnson City a more beautiful place by helping those in need. On March 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers can meet at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion at Founder’s Park. Those who sign up will receive a free t-shirt. All those who help will receive a free lunch.
The event is co-sponsored by Meet the Mountains Festival of Johnson City, Visit Johnson City, Young Professionals of Johnson City, Volunteer ETSU and ETSU’s Leadership and Civic Engagement.
The event helps non-profits like parks and animal shelters by partnering with them. In this event, they try to keep it local. They want to serve the Tri-Cities area. The student community coordinator or site leaders try to keep the groups organized.
This is the second annual Johnson City Beautification Day. Volunteer ETSU created the event to bring the community and students together. Last year over 70 people showed up. As of right now, there are 150 people signed up.
“We wanted more outreach and community and bring it to the next level,” said president of Volunteer ETSU, Spencer Sheets, “More of the community and students working with each other.”
Sheets hoped that this event would help both the community and students learn how to collaborate. They hope that this will inspire them to continue to be volunteers in the future.
“We always hope you become a lifelong volunteer,” said Sheets.
Volunteer ETSU is a Leadership and Civic Engagement student group that gives students opportunities to volunteer for the community. A majority of their events are limited to the students. Their most notable event is Service Saturdays. They have also participated in blanket making and holiday card making with Buctainment.
They are currently hiring eight student community coordinators for the Fall 2024-Spring 2024 academic year. This job includes communicating with nonprofits and reaching out to the community. They are also hiring a social media marketing manager.
