ETSU has partnered with Ballad Health to create a new childcare center for students, the Ballad Health Center for Early Learning. Formerly known as Little Buccaneers, the new facility hopes to serve and access more students.

Childcare Funding Coordinator Kerrie Olorin, said that it will serve ETSU students, Ballad Health employees and members of the community. The new facility will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., with only two scheduled closing days, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Once the kitchen opens, three hot meals and snacks for the children will be provided at no extra cost. Olorin shared all materials needed will also be supplied, excluding baby formula and diapers.

The facility is currently open but not at maximum capacity. Olorin shared it is an ongoing process to offer more classes. “They’re approving one classroom at a time,” said Olorin, “They’re still in the process of hiring teachers.

A funding program for the facility is available for students who are Pell grant eligible. The Child Care Access Means Parents in School (CCAMPIS) grant is funded through the Department of education to help students pay for childcare. “Students can apply for it their interested in the Ballad Center for Early Learning at ETSU or if they’re interested in seeking a daycare center in the area,” said Olorin.

The facility will be partnering with local daycare centers and offering workshops in the future. Olorin shared that the content of the workshops will vary but will be centered around parenting. “We’re hoping to partner with Counseling Center and other things on campus,” said Olorin, “In order to get them more services that might be beneficial to them.”

All ETSU students qualify for the Ballad Health Center for Early Learning. Until there is a live application on the website, Olorin encourages students to email her for the application. Olorin can be reached at, olorin@etsu.edu. Once students apply, they will be put on a waiting list.

While the date of full opening is not definite, students are encouraged to apply.
