This past Sunday, Oct. 27, the East Tennessee State University men’s basketball team took on High Point University in a highly anticipated charity exhibition game at Freedom Hall. The game, presented by Johnson City Honda, kicked off at 4 p.m., with all proceeds going toward The Uncommon Grit Foundation and Finnegan’s Challenge.

ETSU and High Point have only met once before in the 1952-53 season, with the Bucs claiming a 71-60 victory. This past Sunday’s matchup not only gave fans a chance to witness two great teams in action but also provided an opportunity to support important causes, with all proceeds going to charity.

The ETSU men’s basketball team gave it their all on Sunday afternoon. Despite a strong effort, the Bucs fell short with a 71-56 loss inside Freedom Hall.

Karon Boyd led the Bucs offense,  scoring a team-high 19 points on the night, including all three of ETSU’s successful three-pointers. Boyd also went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line and pulled down four rebounds. Jaden Seymour contributed 11 points to the offense.

ETSU showed resilience on the boards, out-rebounding High Point 39-37 and securing 17 offensive rebounds, which led to 20 second-chance points. Curt Lewis and guard Quimari Peterson tied for a team-high six rebounds.

ETSU now shifts focus to its season opener on Monday, Nov. 4, when they host Newberry at 7 p.m. inside Freedom Hall. The Bucs will look to build on their preseason performance, honing their shooting and rebounding to secure a strong start to the 2024-25 season.
